Indian Head Massage

Background:

Indian Head Massage is an ancient technique originating in India 4000 years ago! It was introduced to the West by the Osteopath and massage therapist Narendra Mehta who quotes as follows:” When the scalp is loose, blood is able to flow freely and feed the roots. This increased blood circulation strengthens the hair root and promotes health and shine”.

What Does An Indian Head Treatment Constitute?

The treatment will last approximately 45 minutes including a short medical consultation. An Indian Head Massage treatment with Leeds Holistic Health is a unique and profoundly relaxing experience incorporating massage of the shoulders and neck to release built up tightness and tension that tends to readily accumulate in these locations. I will then work on massaging the scalp with or without oil according to preference; apply acupressure/facial reflexology to the face to facilitate healing and re-balancing of the entire body and finish with further deep scalp and some neck and shoulder massage.

Benefits of Indian Head Massage:

  • Although the technique involved in Indian Head Massage is concentrated on the upper part of the body, the potential benefits are widespread.

  • Increased blood flow which nourishes the tissues and encourages healing.

  • Decreases stimulation of the Sympathetic Nervous System: this helps to counter the stress response aiding relaxation and healing.

  • Increased lymphatic flow: this reduces oedema as well as aids the elimination of accumulated toxins from the body thereby stimulating immunity.

  • Relaxes the muscle nerve fibres of the head, neck and shoulders: this releases tension and fatigue; increases flexibility; improves posture; can help to relieve tension headaches and migraines.

  • Decreases inflammation in the tissues: aids pain relief and reduces stress placed on bones and joints.

  • Activates the parasympathetic nervous system: thereby allowing the body to rest, relax and repair. Often leads to improved sleep.

  • Helps to drain the sinuses and relieve facial pain/pressure.

  • Improves circulation to the skin, the scalp and the hair encouraging cell regeneration and promoting healthy hair growth.

  • Relaxes and soothes tense eye muscles.

  • Increases the supply of oxygen to the brain which helps relieve mental fatigue, promotes clearer thinking and improves concentration.

  • Stimulates the release of beta-endorphins and serotonin from the brain: natural painkiller; relieves emotional stress and elevates the mood.

  • Encourages the release of stagnant energy in the body which promotes calmness and a sense of wellbeing.
